The Coconut Grove Community of Miami

Coconut Grove is one of the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhoods of Miami. It was first established in 1825 and has remained one of the most popular neighborhoods since. The neighborhood's name is sometimes spelled "Cocoanut Grove" but the definitive spelling "Coconut Grove" was established when the city was incorporated in 1919. Annexed in 1925 when the city of Miami divided two areas including Coconut Grove and Silver Bluff, it is commonly known to locals as "The Grove".

Coconut Grove approximately corresponds to the same area as the 33133 ZIP code although the ZIP Code includes parts of Coral Way areas and Coral Gables and a small portion of ZIP Code 33129.

It's bordered by Brickell, The Roads, and Coral Gables which are other desirable neighborhoods of Miami. The small bohemian village is home to recognizable chain restaurants, small local cafes, college bars, and a few independent boutiques that still line the streets. Pull up a chair outside, watch the assortment of shoppers, bar-hoppers, students, and tourists stroll the streets, and enjoy the laid-back ambiance that has long kept Coconut Grove a favorite Miami neighborhood.

Coconut Grove Schools

Coconut Grove is served by the Miami-Dade County Public School District. The district has three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school that specifically serves students in Coconut Grove. These schools include the highly rated Coconut Grove Elementary School, Francis S. Tucker Elementary School, George W Carver Elementary School, and George Washington Carver School. There are several private schools including a Montessori school and several Catholic schools as well.

Coconut Grove Things to Do

Parks

Residents choose to live in this beautiful area because it's close to the ocean, and has a good number of outdoor spaces. Some of the most popular outdoor spaces in Coconut Grove include the 8-acre Kampong Garden, a tropical garden that makes up a portion of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. The Barnacle Historic State Park is also located in Coconut Grove and was built in the 19th century currently home to one of the oldest homes in the county. In addition to these parks, there are several smaller neighborhood parks, sports fields, picnic areas, and walking trails throughout Coconut Grove.

Local Events

Each year, Coconut Grove offers a variety of events and activities including September's Bike Coconut Grove and "Great Streets for Coconut Grove", a presentation and community discussion about making Coconut Grove a more livable environment for all of us. Travel the shady lanes of Coconut Grove viewing historical homes and colorful wildlife.

Locals never miss the Grove Organic Market every Saturday from 11 AM until 7 PM where you can sample delicious local flavors, pick up dinner, or simply peruse all of the local flavors, produce, and fair. You can always find karaoke at the Sandbar Sports Grill each Monday at 10 PM. Nearly every restaurant and nightclub will offer some sort of happy hour event or specials on a daily or weekly basis. You can't miss the Coconut Grove Pumpkin Patch Festival, the Great Grove Bed Race, the Miami Short Film Festival, and the Coconut Grove Arts Festival happening each year.

Shopping and Dining

As mentioned earlier, Coconut Grove is one of Miami's most charming neighborhoods to just take a stroll and enjoy the retail and dining atmosphere. One of the most frequented areas for shopping and grabbing a great bit to eat is Cocowalk. It's an urban village in the middle of a Coconut Grove of trees.

The Water

Coconut Grove is well recognized for its many marinas and is a boat lovers' dream in Miami. No matter your boating preferences there's a marina to keep your vessel that will suit your needs. The popular marinas of Coconut Grove include Coral Reef Yacht Club, Coconut Grove Sailing Club, Dinner Key Marina, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and Grove Harbor Marina. Some recognize Coconut Grove as the sailing capital of Miami.

Coconut Grove Real Estate

Coconut Grove has Miami properties of every type. You can find homes in many different architectural styles including old Spanish, classic Bungalows, modern, and Mediterranian. Some might describe the prominent home style as South Florida style. One of the most attractive qualities of the luxury homes in Coconut Grove is their privacy located in secure gated communities and in quiet pockets a bit removed from busier areas. There are also several great convenient and walkable condo homes and duplexes right next to "downtown."
