Bay Harbor Islands is a town in the Miami-Dade County of Florida and is home to about 5,900 residents. It is separated from the mainland by Biscayne Bay, with which it is connected via the Broad Causeway. On the mainland side, Bay Harbor Islands is bordered by the city of North Miami, while to the east it borders the villages of Bal Harbor and Surfside. To the south lies the exclusive Indian Creek Island. Bay Harbor Islands is about a 20-minute driving distance from Miami International Airport and is situated between the larger cities of Aventura to the north and Miami Beach to the south.
It's a fairly new city founded in 1947 consisting of two distinct islands: first named Broadview and Bay Harbor but are now just referred to as the West Island and the East Island. The West Island (Broadview) contains exclusively single-family homes and on the east island (Bay Harbor) is the business district with a few multi-family housing options. Just south of the Bay Harbor Islands are the prestigiious Indian Creek Island and the Indian Creek Country Club. This small island is accessible only through Surfside.

The Bay Harbor Islands began as an idea formulated by a Belarusan born area philanthropist named Shepard Broad who was also a lawyer and banker. He brought the uninhabited mangrove islands at the time of postwar development booms in Miami. These islands were incorporated as their own town in 1947. This is a great place to live for anyone who wants to be not only right on the water but escape the constant activity and buzz of living in the bigger cities in the Miami Dade area. It is a fantastic quiet area to live and many of the people here have their own boats moored at private docs.
The islands are very much a quiet suburban atmosphere just minutes from highly popular amenities and nightlife. On the islands themselves you will find some great boutiques, drugstores, cafés, and even some car show rooms. The east island has more of a population density and commercial area and the west island retains more of the relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. For more activities and excitement Miami it's just a 30 minute drive.
The best boutique shopping in the area can be found on east island along Kane Concourse. It is a great place to stroll and take a leisurely shopping afternoon you can find everything from jewelry to housewares to the best unique clothing. The shops at Bal Harbor are just across the creek and also offer more high-end shopping experiences.
Those who live on the islands enjoy hopping over to the Indian Creek Golf Course. There are also three other great golf courses within 5 miles of Bay Harbor Islands. Normandy Shores Golf Club is on Normandy Isles and the Miami Shores Club is very close by on the mainland.
If you love to get outside and just relax enjoying the outdoors there are some great parks. Scott Winters Park is located in the middle of east island offering green space, a covered play area, and a water play feature. Surfside Park is in nearby Bal Harbor it is a small park that offers a basketball court, play structure, and open fields. If you are looking for a great spot to let your furry family members run around the North Beach Oceanside Park is a fun area that allows offleash pets. It also has a great system of shady walking trails and a small strip of beach.
